The ABS 1998/99 Household Expenditure Survey for Australia included Household Services and Operation as well as Miscellaneous Goods and Services but unfortunately was not broken down sufficiently to identify the Lifestyle/Amenity Horticulture costs that would relate to Australian Households. In 2003 the Queensland Government Department of Primary Industries undertook research into the Consumer Trends for Lifestyle Horticulture Industry in Queensland. This is the only identified specific research undertaken for the Lifestyle Horticulture Industry in Australia at this time. The following information was obtained. Nationally these figures are included in other statistical information and not broken down or available in this format.

ENGINEERING/INFRASTRUCTURE CONSTRUCTION AUSTRALIA.

Engineering construction makes a substantial contribution to the overall Landscape/building and construction activity. While recent attention has largely focussed on the residential Landscape/building sector, there has also been increasing activity for the Landscape Contractor in the commercial engineering construction sector. This sector includes areas such as major infrastructure projects like highways, hospitals and schools with their open space areas; open public parklands; major property and residential developments; tourist areas, attractions and resorts; major for sporting facilities (Olympics); etc.

Value of work done, Volume terms (ABS: MARCH 2004)

The total value of engineering work done has grown steadily over the last ten years, with most of this growth being in the private sector. Public sector activity has remained relatively constant. The total value of engineering construction work done in Australia over the past fifteen years has been largely dominated by 'roads, highways and subdivisions', as shown in the graph below. Other major contributors have been 'telecommunications', 'heavy industry', and 'electricity generation transmission, distribution and pipelines'.

Engineering construction by State,

% of Australian work done (ABS MAR, 2004)

The above graph indicates that the four major contributors to the value of work done over the last fifteen years have been New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia, respectively. Queensland has shown a steady increase in its proportion of the total value of work done in Australia
